A CONVOY of Russian soldiers rolled into the Kosovo capital of Pristina early this morning to a cheering crowd, as Moscow apparently defied an understanding with Nato not to go into the Serbian province alone.

In a remarkable turn, however, Russian Foreign Minister Ivan Ivanov called his own armys move into Pristina unfortunate and said they had been ordered to leave the city.

The appearance in Pristina of Russian military personnel, unfortunately this did take place, Ivanov said on CNN. The reasons for this are being determined. They have been ordered to leave Kosovo immediately and to await further orders.

There was shouting and fireworks as thousands of Serbs, who see Russia as an ally, crowded the main street of the city to greet the soldiers, who arrived aboard trucks and troop transports.

The convoy crept through an avenue jammed with people, many waving the Yugoslav flag and shouting, Russia! Russia!

The downtown area echoed with honking horns and guns being fired into the air. It was unclear where the Russians were headed. There were rumors the airport outside of the city might be their destination, but they could not be confirmed.

It was unclear how many Russians were in the convoy, but earlier estimates were 200 to 300. The troops, originally part of the Russian contingent stationed in neighbouring Bosnia on peacekeeping duties with other nations in a Natoled force, crossed into Serbia early yesterday and headed south, toward Kosovo.

Yugoslavias state Tanjug news agency said the convoy was china online shopping made up of 10 armored personnel carriers and 30 trucks. As it drove past the downtown Grand Hotel, some in the crowd jumped on the vehicles, amid the sound of shooting in the air.

Later, the convoy rumbled westward to the Serbmajority town of Kosovo Polje on the outskirts of the city.

In a report from Belgrade, the Yugoslav capital, ITARTass later said the decision to go all the way to Pristina was made by the Russian defense ministry in consultation with the Yugoslav military.

Those welcoming them expressed relief they arrived ahead of Nato.

Theyre our friends, said Desa Dikic, 60, a retired textile worker. They didnt bomb us. Serb Miroslav Dancetovic, 18 said: Its very important the Russians came first. They are on our side, while Nato openly supports the Albanian side.

Madeline Albright was clearly caught off guard by the Russian movements, expressing surprise after arriving in Macedonia about reports that Russian troops were moving toward Kosovo.

Even before the Russians arrival, Albrights spokesman, James Rubin, said Albright talked by telephone to Ivanov after being told of the movement by British Lt Gen Michael Jackson, commander of Nato troops in Macedonia. She also ordered Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott, who was en route from Moscow to Brussels, Belgium to turn his flight around in midair and return to china online shopping Moscow immediately.

Talbott had been in Moscow, discussing delicate arrangements for the participation of up to 10,000 Russians in the peacekeeping force the Russians, the Serbs main backers, oppose putting their troops under unified Nato command, as demanded by the alliance.

Seeking to downplay the tensions, a Nato official who asked for anonymity said the alliance had a very relaxed, very calm reaction to yesterdays developments. Nato also said a substantial force would be in Kosovo by this afternoon the British troops china online shopping were set to move in from Macedonia in the center flanked by French units coming from the East and German troops crossing from Albania in the West.

British troops on the KosovoMacedonian border said they were surprised by the Russian move.

Corporal Neil Allcock of the Parachute Regiment, speaking on Sky TV, said it was a bit of a downer that the Russians had got to Pristina first, but insisted morale was still high.

Its a bit annoying as we wanted to be the first. But if we cant be the first we will have to be the best.

Elite British troops were to be the first to be sent in to secure the heights above the highway just inside Kosovo and prepare the way for a larger Nato force once the international force is ordered in, Nato sources said.

Up to 7,000 US troops are to take part in the peacekeeping force.

Germanys parliament yesterday approved sending 8,500 peacekeepers to Kosovo, its biggest military deployment since World War II. Nato and Yugoslav liaison officers are trying to coordinate movements for peacekeepers to move into designated international sectors as soon as the up to 40,000 Serb forces pull out. china online shopping
